An Internet Emergency with the In-Laws

December 22nd, 2009 | by Ryan Stewart |

I’ll keep it short. My wife and I are visiting with her parents for the next few days and I need to set up a wireless network while we’re here. I want to avoid substituting their wired router for mine at all costs - because if I do that and something happens to her dad’s computer any time between now and next Christmas, I’ll get the blame :).

So, the question is, how do I “daisy chain” my wireless router to his wired router and create a wireless network to save myself?

So far, the connection is MODEM->WIRED ROUTER (lan port)->WIRELESS ROUTER (wan port)

I’ve turned off DHCP on my router.

Is this possible? Thanks in advance for helping to make my Christmas merry.

Hey Ryan. Yes it’s possible, that’s how I’ve always extended my network. Just plug from LAN port to LAN port. It seems weird, but that’s how to do it. Good luck!

Thanks, Kevin. I gave that a shot and ended up not being able to connect to the wireless network at all after that - then I had to powercycle the wired router to get internet running smoothly again. Weird stuff going on here.

I got it working, temporarily, Kevin. Thanks for the tip. I think an IP address conflict is causing my wireless router to knock the other computers off the network. Should I change the IP address on the wireless router?

    Again, I appreciate the help.

Yes, your router is probably something like 192.168.1.1, so I’d change the other one to 192.168.1.2. I’ve had that exact same set up and it worked fine. Just make sure DHCP is off on one of them, like you said, so that only one router can give out IPs. As for me, I used my wireless router as more of an access point, and just let my wired router handle all the DHCP requests.
