iPaperCraft.com - Custom Paper Covers for your iPod

December 5th, 2006

Inspired by flickr member Ape Lad and with the testing help of MAKE: Magazine readers, I created a php script using the ezPDF class that would generate PDF papercraft templates for any iPod model to date.

The iPaperCraft.com PDF generator lets you upload an image of your choice and it spits that image, along with fold and cutlines in PDF format.

Amazon Discount Link Generator

November 30th, 2006

Inspired by the research and sharing of ProBargainHunter.com, the Amazon Discount Link Generator let’s you choose a department and a bargain range for items therein and generates a link to Amazon.com for items that fit the bill. The screenshot below pretty much says it all.

In a glaringly unoriginal state, I called it Amazargains. Luckily, I didn’t bother to buy the domain name. Regardless of the name, though, it’s certainly easy to use and it does, in fact, help you find bargains.

How to Save $25 Every Time You Talk to a Prospective Customer

April 26th, 2006

My good friends at Scenic Valley Products were sending out price sheets like crazy. I’m talking professional, 4-color, glossy sheets; with photos of the products, the pricing, and the customer name changed every single time. But there was a problem. Their print designer charged $25 just to open a file. So every time they needed a new price sheet, they got a bill for $25.

Long story short, the guys at Scenic Valley called me and asked if I had any ideas. Within a day, they were saving $25 per customer by using an online script I created that makes the price sheets for them. With the customer on the phone, Scenic Valley representatives can enter the information into a simple web form, and generate a custom price sheet immediately - with the same professional quality.

The speed with which they are able to send prospective customers price sheets alone was worth the small price they paid to create the tool, and they save a real, tangible, $25 every time they send one out. By the way, it’s a PDF so they can send it by email before ever getting off the phone.

Your Photography Carte de Visite

January 7th, 2006

You know you’re a photography junkie. You can’t go anywhere without at least one camera. And only your camera is more essential than this Carte de Viste - it’s a street photographers best friend!

Take a few minutes to play around and generate your very own, carte de visite to show all those people who stare at you while you’re taking photos where they can find the picture you just took! Trade ‘em on the subway or on the street for a quick photo of that interesting couple. You may find that people don’t really care where you point your camera - as long as they can see the result!

A PDF Generator for the Cornell Notetaking Method

September 10th, 2005

The Cornell Notetaking method has been on the rise for several years now as teachers and students make a more concerted effort to organize the deluge of information presented in classes, texts, and media. Wikipedia says,

Cornell notes, also called the Cornell note-taking system, is a widely-used notetaking system devised in the 1950s by Walter Pauk, an education professor at Cornell University. Pauk advocated its use in his best-selling How to Study in College. Its popularity has risen dramatically in the 2000s, particularly with the advent of education reform. For example, the New York Public Education System is implementing it, while most southern californian schools (such as the garden grove unified school district) are slowly switching to using it.

Cornell University likes to explain the method by example (pdf).

While it’s easy enough to divide the paper into three sections, I wanted to create a tool that would allow students to develop the habit of taking notes using the Cornell Method. This PDF generator allows the user to choose between three note areas (ruled, blank, or grid) as well print duplex versions of his/her note paper.

Hipster PDA Cover Generator

September 1st, 2005

It was a crisp September day in 2004 when Merlin Mann first introduced the Hipster PDA - a simple stack of index cards held together with a small binder clip with one simple purpose . . . to make its master productive. In the months since, use of the Hipster PDA has become widespread and scores of custom cards and concepts have sprung up.

But I wanted something different. I wanted something I could call my own - not just a simple stack of notecards. I wanted something with personality, so I created the Hipster PDA Cover Generator. And now, my friend, I share it with you.
